POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States will impose new tariffs on European Union products in response to the bloc’s $1 billion fine on Alphabet’s Google.

In a social media post, Trump stated that the US would launch a trade investigation “into the practice of ‘ROBBING’ American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer.”

“The penalties will be entirely reversed and, we anticipate, a substantial TARIFF to be placed on them at the earliest possible moment,” Trump wrote.

The European Union imposed the fine on Google for antitrust violations, a decision that has drawn criticism from US officials who argue it unfairly targets American companies.

Trump’s announcement comes amid heightened trade tensions between the US and the EU, with both sides imposing tariffs on each other’s goods in recent months.
