The sentence follows a plea deal last year where Zambada admitted to trafficking millions of kilograms of cocaine over several decades as the leader of the violent Sinaloa Cartel. US District Judge Brian Cogan delivered the sentence during a hearing in Brooklyn federal court. Zambada is one of the most notorious Mexican drug traffickers to be sentenced in a US court since Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, another leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, was convicted.
