POLICY WIRE — Las Vegas, United States — Rising star Youssef Zalal is on the precipice of a significant advancement within the UFC‘s competitive featherweight division, but first, he faces the formidable challenge of former champion Aljamain Sterling.
This high-stakes bout headlines UFC Fight Night 274 at the Meta APEX, representing a crucial matchup with substantial implications for the division’s hierarchy. Zalal, boasting an impressive 18-5-1 professional mixed martial arts record (8-3-1 in the UFC), is set to clash with Sterling, who holds a 25-5 MMA record (17-5 in the UFC).
Zalal’s Ascent and Sterling’s Proving Ground
Currently ranked No. 7 in the official UFC standings, Zalal has a golden opportunity to penetrate the division’s upper echelon by defeating the No. 5-ranked Sterling. “The Moroccan Devil” anticipates encountering “The Funkmaster” at his absolute peak performance, believing the former bantamweight king still has unaddressed aspirations despite his decorated career.
“This is the most dangerous Aljo, just because I think he has a point to prove, you know what I mean?” Zalal remarked during Wednesday’s media day. “He’s on a proving-point streak right now, so for me it’s like, at the end of the day, stick to my gut, stick to who I am, and be ready because I want to beat the best Aljo.”
Zalal emphasized the caliber of his opponent, acknowledging Sterling‘s extensive experience against top-tier competitors. “You can’t say you want to be a world champion and you think he’s gonna slide by like some other guys. This guy fought who’s whos and all that stuff. That’s what I look at. I’m like, that’s a very dangerous guy, and also a very experienced guy,” he added.
Indeed, Sterling‘s career includes battles with numerous Hall of Famers, past champions, and fan favorites within the UFC octagon. In contrast, Zalal‘s fighting resume, while growing, doesn’t yet mirror Sterling‘s extensive list of accolades, a fact he good-naturedly conceded with a laugh.
“It’s crazy, it’s making my resume look small as sh*t,” Zalal admitted. He reflected on criticisms, saying, “They were like, ‘Ah, Youssef hasn’t fought nobody. The only win he has is Josh Emmett,’ and all this stuff. They’re like, ‘(Calvin) Kattar is 0-5,’ and all this. I was like, ‘Those guys fought those guys as well! I don’t know what to tell you!’ This is my time, I was young, these guys are in the f*cking UFC. I was like, it is what it is – but that’s the beauty of this sport. You get to go against a guy like that, beat him, and you get to steal his resume pretty much.”
The Road to Dominance
For Zalal, the ultimate goal is to secure a decisive finish in the fight, solidifying his arrival among the elite names in the featherweight division. Since returning to the promotion in 2024 for his second tenure, Zalal has remained undefeated, boasting a 5-0 record with four of those victories coming by stoppage.
This impressive run has positioned him for his first-ever UFC main event. Despite his success, Zalal admits he finds it challenging to pause and fully appreciate his accomplishments, as his focus remains steadfastly on future goals. However, his dedicated team ensures he takes moments to reflect, particularly ahead of this career-defining contest.

“It’s really hard for me sometimes,” Zalal confessed. “I’m a meathead when it comes to, like, when I focus on a goal, that’s all I care about is that goal, you know what I mean? And sometimes I forget about the outside life. But yeah, I’ve definitely been blessed enough to have great people around me to kind of make me step away a little bit like, ‘Hey, you’ve done this. You did this. You came here and changed your life.’ And I can’t wait to keep changing my life.”
