POLICY WIRE — Rotterdam, Netherlands — AZ Alkmaar delivered a commanding performance in the recent KNVB Cup final, decisively defeating NEC Nijmegen with a 5-1 scoreline.
Despite widespread expectations for a tightly contested match between perennial finalists AZ Alkmaar and the surprising Eredivisie challengers NEC, it was Alkmaar, making their second consecutive appearance in the final, who ultimately overpowered their adversaries.
Nonetheless, the final score doesn’t entirely reflect the match’s progression, which remained surprisingly competitive for much of the first hour.
Match Dynamics Unfold
The deadlock was finally broken just past the thirty-minute mark.
A superb offensive play initiated by Ro-Zangelo Daal on the wing created an opportunity for Mees de Wit, who successfully netted the inaugural goal.
The single-goal lead persisted until well into the second half. Following the hour mark, a swift counter-attack saw Kees Smit release the advancing Sven Mijnans, who doubled AZ’s advantage.
As NEC intensified their efforts to find an equalizer, their defensive lines became vulnerable, allowing Peer Koopmeiners to exploit the space and convert a magnificent strike for the third goal.
Clinical Finish Secures Victory
With roughly a quarter-hour remaining, the outcome seemed all but certain, with the trophy poised to return to Alkmaar.
However, moments later, NEC managed to find a lifeline when substitute Koki Ogawa pulled one goal back.
Despite this, AZ maintained their ruthless efficiency on the break. Although a second goal from Mijnans was disallowed for offside, Smit artfully chipped NEC goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen in injury time to extend the lead to 4-1. Shortly thereafter, Troy Parrott added a fifth with a deflected shot, completing the rout.
At this point, NEC had largely abandoned their defensive shape in a desperate attempt to score, leaving vast areas open at the back.
European Aspirations Realized
For AZ, who suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in last year’s final, this victory marks their fifth KNVB Cup triumph. This achievement brings their historical cup final record to five wins and four losses.
Crucially, this cup victory guarantees AZ Alkmaar a coveted spot in a European competition next season. Meanwhile, NEC still retains a strong opportunity to qualify for Europe through their domestic league position.
NEC will be looking to cap off what has been an impressive campaign by securing a top-four finish in the Eredivisie, which could also lead to European football. Discussions about coaching futures and club strategies, such as those surrounding Álvaro Arbeloa’s potential role at Real Madrid, often intensify as seasons conclude and European qualification battles are decided.
