Pakistan and Türkiye: Partners in Progress and Vision
As Türkiye celebrated its 102nd Republic Day this week, the spirit of brotherhood between Islamabad and Ankara shone brightly. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s warm message to the Turkish people was...
A century after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk laid the foundations of modern Türkiye, the nation stands tall as a beacon of resilience, vision, and innovation. Türkiye’s economy now reaches USD 1.32 trillion in GDP (2024), placing it among the top global economies (World Bank). Pakistan, guided by its own aspirations for renewal, sees in Türkiye not only a trusted ally but also a source of encouragement and example. Both countries, bound by faith, history, and common purpose, are charting a new chapter of cooperation rooted in trust and ambition.
A Brotherhood Rooted in History
The friendship between Pakistan and Türkiye is among the most enduring in the world. Its roots stretch back to the early twentieth century when Muslims of the subcontinent supported the Turkish nation during its struggle for independence. That emotional bond evolved into a robust diplomatic partnership following Pakistan’s creation in 1947, and today it stands as a symbol of unity between two proud nations whose solidarity has never wavered.
Over the decades, this shared history has nurtured deep mutual understanding. Türkiye’s swift assistance to Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake and the 2022 floods, and Pakistan’s support following Türkiye’s 2023 earthquakes, are testament to this bond. What makes this relationship truly exceptional is its continuity and warmth across generations and governments.
Strategic Partnership for a New Era
In recent years, Pakistan and Türkiye have elevated their historic friendship into a dynamic strategic partnership. During Prime Minister Sharif’s recent engagement with Ankara, the two nations signed multiple memoranda of understanding covering defence cooperation, technology transfer, and trade expansion. These agreements underscore a shared vision to turn enduring friendship into tangible progress that fuels innovation, strengthens economies, and promotes peace.
In the defence sector, the collaboration is striking. Under a 2018 agreement worth approximately USD 1.5 billion, Pakistan and Türkiye are working together to build four MILGEM-class corvettes — a landmark in naval modernization. Joint discussions are underway on drones, aviation, and advanced manufacturing. Meanwhile, Türkiye’s defence exports exceeded USD 7.1 billion in 2024, marking a record surge and illustrating Türkiye’s global leadership in the defence industry (Defense News). Together, Pakistan and Türkiye are building a bridge of innovation that supports self-reliance and technological advancement in both countries.
Expanding Economic and Technological Horizons
Economic and technological cooperation lie at the heart of this evolving partnership. The Pakistan–Türkiye Preferential Trade Agreement, implemented in 2023, aims to boost bilateral trade from around USD 1.1 billion in 2022 to more than USD 5 billion within five years. Türkiye’s advanced industries, from construction and textiles to energy and tourism, align naturally with Pakistan’s expanding markets, youthful workforce, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Pakistan’s tech-startup ecosystem has also gained momentum. Under the National Incubation Centres (NICs) supported by the IGNITE–National Technology Fund, over 1,900 startups have been incubated, more than 960 have graduated, generating over 185,000 jobs, attracting investments of Rs 30.8 billion, and earning combined revenues exceeding Rs 27.3 billion (INP). On the Turkish side, digital governance, fintech, and smart manufacturing are areas of global competitiveness that can complement Pakistan’s growth. Together, these two nations are poised to lead in knowledge-based and technology-driven growth.
By combining Türkiye’s mature industry experience with Pakistan’s youthful innovation and market potential, they can create a model of sustainable, inclusive growth. Joint research centres, industrial zones, educational exchanges, and technology parks could link ideas, talent, and opportunity across borders in unprecedented ways.
Diplomatic Harmony and Shared Global Vision
On the diplomatic front, Pakistan and Türkiye continue to demonstrate remarkable harmony. Both nations consistently support each other in international forums, whether at the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or other multilateral platforms. Their shared positions on peace, justice, and regional stability underline their moral leadership and sense of responsibility.
Türkiye’s humanitarian diplomacy and Pakistan’s distinguished record in UN peacekeeping reflect a shared philosophy that true strength lies in unity, compassion, and mutual respect among nations. Both countries champion multilateralism, cultural dialogue, and economic connectivity — values that are essential for a more just and balanced international order.
Together, they embody a vision of a world that is modern, confident, and forward-looking — grounded in faith yet open to the future. This is a partnership that does not just react to global shifts but actively shapes them, offering hope and cooperation in a world that often prizes competition.
A Friendship for the Future
The Pakistan–Türkiye relationship is more than a diplomatic bond; it is a living testament to the power of shared destiny. It represents a partnership built on mutual admiration, guided by visionary leadership, and strengthened by the goodwill of their peoples. Both nations stand side by side, confident in their ability to translate friendship into tangible progress across fields including defence, economy, technology, and culture.
As Türkiye celebrates its 102nd Republic Day and Pakistan marches toward its 80th year of independence in 2027, their partnership shines as an inspiring example for the region and the world. It shows what can be achieved when two nations choose cooperation over division and vision over inertia.
Bound by history and propelled by ambition, Pakistan and Türkiye are not merely partners; they are brothers in purpose, builders of a shared future, and torchbearers of progress in the twenty-first century. Their alliance is a reminder that when trust and vision converge, boundaries fade and possibilities expand.
“When two nations believe in each other’s hope, their journey together becomes the story of many tomorrows.”
