FDA Approves Bemotrizinol: A New Era for U.S. Sunscreen Innovation
The FDA has approved bemotrizinol (BEMT), the first new sunscreen filter in 25 years. Discover how this UV-blocking ingredient is changing skincare.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — American consumers are seeing a significant shift in sun protection options as the FDA officially added bemotrizinol, commonly known as BEMT, to its list of approved active sunscreen ingredients this June. This development marks the first time in over 25 years that the agency has authorized a new filter for use in the United States.
While BEMT has long been a staple in European, Asian, and Australian markets—and a frequent component in popular Korean skincare products—it was previously unavailable in the U.S. due to the FDA’s rigorous drug classification process for sunscreens. Dr. Hadley King, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, described the approval as a major milestone that finally addresses the long-standing gap between American and international UV protection standards.
According to Dr. King, BEMT is a broad-spectrum chemical filter capable of shielding skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. A standout feature of the ingredient is its high photostability, meaning it maintains its protective integrity without degrading significantly when exposed to direct sunlight.
The dermatologist noted that this approval likely signals the start of a broader trend toward modernizing sunscreen formulas in the U.S. By allowing for more cosmetically elegant, lightweight, and comfortable products, the industry hopes to encourage more consistent daily sun protection habits among consumers.
Brands are already moving to integrate BEMT into their product lines. Ultra Violette has introduced a formula tailored for acne-prone skin that features a soft matte finish and hydrating plant extracts. Meanwhile, Neutrogena has updated its Clear Face line to include the filter, offering a noncomedogenic option that incorporates niacinamide and vitamin E.
Other upcoming releases include a peptide-infused formula designed for dry to normal skin types, as well as a new iteration of the popular La Roche-Posay Anthelios sunscreen. The latter, which features an antioxidant complex, is currently available for pre-order ahead of its October 20 release date.
