Russian security services have arrested a Swedish citizen in the Pskov region, accusing him of planning terrorist attacks and sabotage for Ukraine.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia announced on Thursday the arrest of a Swedish national accused of orchestrating terrorist activities and sabotage on behalf of Ukraine.
Authorities apprehended the suspect in the northwestern Pskov region, located near the border with Lithuania. Officials allege the man entered the country illegally with the intent to target military infrastructure.
According to the FSB, the individual claimed he was traveling to Russia to join the Russian Armed Forces. The agency contends this was a pretext used to facilitate his plans for carrying out attacks against military facilities.
A criminal investigation has been initiated against the suspect, with charges including terrorism and mercenary activity. The arrest follows a series of security actions by Russian authorities, including the separate detention of eight individuals accused of plotting an attack on an enterprise in the Moscow region.
