Singapore Weighs Legal Action Against Firms Amid Escalating Haze Crisis
Singapore's Environment Minister Grace Fu confirms the government is gathering data to potentially prosecute companies under the Transboundary Haze Act.
POLICY WIRE — Singapore, Singapore — Sustainability and Environment Minister Grace Fu announced on Wednesday evening that the government is actively compiling data regarding the current haze crisis to determine if legal measures are warranted.
Authorities are evaluating potential enforcement under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act. This legislation, which was first introduced in 2014, provides a framework for holding entities accountable for their role in regional air pollution.
The law specifically targets organizations that either cause or permit fires leading to significant air quality degradation. Legal intervention is triggered if the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remains within the unhealthy range for a duration of 24 hours or longer.
