Thieves steal 30,000 bottles of prized Italian wine worth $5.8 million in country's largest ever wine heist.
POLICY WIRE — Rome, Italy — Thieves stole approximately 30,000 bottles of high-value Italian wines, including Solaia, Tignanello, and Guado al Tasso, from the Marchesi Antinori winery in Tuscany, marking what officials are calling the largest wine heist in the country’s history.
The theft, which occurred at the winery near Cortona in the province of Arezzo, involved a well-organized gang that disabled security systems before loading two large trucks with the stolen vintage wines. The company, founded in 1385 and run by the Antinori family for 26 generations, confirmed the loss on Friday, though the crime was discovered on Monday.
