Christa Pike Shows Signs of Recovery After Botched Execution Attempt
Christa Pike is walking and eating again after a failed execution attempt in Tennessee, her attorneys reveal. Details on her condition and legal future.
POLICY WIRE — Nashville, Tennessee — Christa Pike has begun walking with assistance and eating again a week after surviving a botched execution in Tennessee, according to her attorneys.
Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital during the state’s attempt to carry out her death sentence for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. The drug did not kill her, and she suffered burns and blisters on her arms. She was unconscious and on a ventilator for the first few days of her hospitalization.

Her attorneys stated that while her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured. They also emphasized that Pike should never be subjected to another execution attempt and have urged Governor Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison without parole.
