The incident occurred during the production of the 1986 film The Name of the Rose, where Connery played a Franciscan friar solving a mystery in a medieval abbey. Ron Perlman, known for his role in Hellboy, portrayed a hunchbacked monk who was required to spit in the friar’s eye.

Perlman admitted he initially struggled with the scene but ultimately followed Connery’s directive to complete it.
