Nicaraguan Torture Survivor Deported, Imprisoned Again
Nicaraguan exile deported by US faces second imprisonment after torture. Family and lawyer confirm detention.
POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — A Nicaraguan exile who was tortured during anti-government protests was deported by the U.S. and immediately imprisoned again upon returning to his home country, according to family members and his lawyer.
Jarquín, 35, was taken to the same prison where he was once tortured after landing in Managua, Nicaragua’s capital, last week. He had previously been detained and subjected to harsh treatment during the 2018 protests against President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo’s regime.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported Jarquín despite his asylum case being rejected. His lawyer said he was held in a Florida detention center before being sent back. The Nicaraguan government has been accused of brutally suppressing dissent, leading to the exodus of over 800,000 people, according to U.N. figures.
