Hurricane Nolo Intensifies to Category 3 in the Remote Pacific Ocean
Hurricane Nolo rapidly strengthens into a Category 3 storm in the remote Pacific Ocean, prompting warnings for protected marine monuments.
POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — Hurricane Nolo rapidly intensified into a major storm on Saturday, reaching Category 3 status while churning through the remote reaches of the Pacific Ocean far to the west of Hawaii’s main islands and population centers.
According to updates from the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, the storm’s maximum sustained winds escalated sharply to reach 115 mph, equivalent to 185 kph.
By Saturday evening, coordinates placed Nolo approximately 200 miles, or 320 kilometers, south-southwest of Lisianski Island, maintaining a westward trajectory at a speed of 20 mph, which translates to 31 kph.
Authorities issued a tropical storm warning covering the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a vast and isolated federally protected expanse encompassing various islands, atolls, seamounts, shoals, and coral reefs stretching from Maro Reef to Lisianski Island.

Forecasters at the hurricane center warned that heavy surf driven by Nolo will likely inundate several low-lying atolls in the region, though current predictions indicate no immediate danger to any populated landmasses.
Meteorologists project that the storm will cross the international date line on Sunday, following an earlier path that skirted Hawaii as a hurricane a week prior before temporarily weakening into a tropical storm and subsequently regaining hurricane strength on Friday.
Meanwhile, a separate weather system in the Pacific, Category 1 Hurricane Rachel, continued tracking westward away from the western coastline of Mexico.
The hurricane center noted that hazardous ocean swells are anticipated to persist throughout the weekend along the west-central coast of Mexico and through Monday across the Baja California Peninsula.
