Actor Luke Evans discusses closeted Hollywood stars and his own journey as a gay performer in exclusive interview.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Actor Luke Evans has shared insights into the challenges faced by openly gay performers in Hollywood, revealing that he knows several actors who have chosen to keep their sexuality private.
The 47-year-old Disney star came out early in his career and acknowledged the difficulties of being one of the few openly gay figures in the industry for an extended period. He emphasized that the decision to remain closeted is often influenced by personal circumstances that are not always visible to others.
Evans told The Telegraph, “You never know what a person has gone through.” He added that while it was difficult to be the only openly gay actor for many years, he respects the choices of those who opt for privacy. He also reflected on the lack of support systems within the industry, stating that no one offers guidance on how to navigate coming out publicly.

Evans, who grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness, said he struggled with his identity and left his family and religion at 16 to pursue acting. He described facing bullying and the need to find his own voice and independence. When asked about the possibility of a gay actor playing James Bond, he noted he was on the list for the role for over a decade but feels he is now too old for the part.
Throughout his career, Evans has appeared in films such as Clash of the Titans and the Fast & Furious series. He recently made his Broadway debut and will star in the upcoming ITV drama The Party.
