Romo was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Milwaukee in July after officers reported that he performed poorly on standardized sobriety tests. He later pleaded no contest to the charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. In a recent Instagram post, Romo acknowledged that chronic pain from multiple back surgeries led to a reliance on medication, which eventually contributed to alcohol dependence. He took full responsibility for his actions and stated he is working with medical professionals to address his challenges.
The network initially placed Romo on suspension, with J.J. Watt stepping in as a replacement. CBS Sports announced that Watt will continue as part of the lead announcing team alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the remainder of the season.
