ICC Imposes Five-Run Penalty for Batters Wasting Time
ICC introduces five-run penalty for batters wasting time, new ball specs, and pink ball trials in day Tests.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a new rule that allows for a five-run penalty to be imposed on a team if batters are found to be wasting time three or more times during an innings.
The change, which took effect on October 1, 2026, aims to ensure batters are ready to face the ball as soon as the fielding side and bowler are prepared. A warning will be given for the first offense, another for the second, and a five-run penalty awarded to the opposing team for the third and any subsequent offenses.

In addition to the time-wasting rule, the ICC also announced stricter specifications for the size and weight of cricket balls, with distinct standards for men’s, women’s, and junior cricket. The governing body has also permitted the use of pink balls—previously reserved for day-night Tests—to be trialed in daytime matches, provided both teams agree beforehand.
