Ex-Fraternity Leader Sentenced for Role in Pledge’s Alcohol Poisoning Death
A former fraternity leader at Northern Arizona University was sentenced to jail after a pledge died from alcohol poisoning during hazing activities.
POLICY WIRE — Flagstaff, Ariz. — A former Northern Arizona University fraternity leader was sentenced to two months in jail for his role in the death of a pledge who succumbed to alcohol poisoning during hazing activities.
Carter Eslick, 20, pleaded guilty to a felony hazing charge in the Jan. 31 death of Colin Daniel Martinez, 18, at an off-campus house. An autopsy revealed Martinez had a blood-alcohol content of 0.425%, more than five times the legal limit for drivers over 21.

Eslick, who was the fraternity’s pledge master at the time, received three years of supervised probation and must complete anti-hazing presentations. The university suspended the fraternity following the incident, and the national organization later closed the NAU chapter.
