UK Warns of Chinese Espionage via Academic Research Funding
MI5 warns UK academics may be aiding Chinese espionage through research projects. New security measures target ties with China's CGTRI.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The UK’s intelligence agency MI5 has issued a rare public warning that a Chinese organization is funding academic research in sensitive areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity on behalf of Beijing’s state security apparatus.
The alert, released on Wednesday, stated that over 100 UK-based researchers have participated in projects supported by the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), which MI5 claims has strong connections to the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS). The agency said the primary goal of these funded projects is to enhance the MSS’s capabilities for espionage, posing a risk to national security.

MI5 emphasized that many academics and institutions likely engaged with CGTRI without knowing its links to the MSS, but it warned that continued collaboration could now lead to legal consequences under the 2023 National Security Act. A government official urged universities to cut ties with the organization, while China’s embassy in London dismissed the allegations as baseless and called for an end to what it described as false accusations against its research efforts.
