POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — Rescue operations are ongoing in Nepal as authorities search for 12 individuals still unaccounted for following an avalanche that claimed at least two lives on a mountain in the country’s north-central region.

The incident occurred on Sunday during heavy rainfall, which also triggered flooding and landslides in the Manang district. The avalanche struck a base camp where climbers were preparing for the autumn climbing season, which began this month.

Ten people were successfully rescued from Mount Himlung, a peak standing at 23,380 feet. Two of the deceased were recovered and transported to Kathmandu by helicopter, while the government has issued severe weather alerts across the Himalayan nation. In recent days, 21 others have died and five more remain missing nationwide due to similar weather conditions.
