Officials confirmed the disaster occurred on Friday, with four other individuals still unaccounted for.

The building, located above street level and rented to tourists, was occupied by the American pair, whose identities have not yet been disclosed. The explosion, which led to significant structural damage, also affected neighboring buildings, some of which are now considered unsafe and under inspection.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the event as an “incredible disaster,” noting that mechanical diggers and thermal imaging equipment were deployed in the rescue operation. Over 30 rescuers and three sniffer dogs were working at the site, while local residents had previously raised concerns about potential gas leaks in the area.
