The Houthis, who have controlled parts of northern Yemen for over a decade, recently seized the strategic port city of Mokha and key Red Sea islands. This move allows them greater surveillance over ships passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway through which about 12% of global trade flows.

Yemen Vice President Abdullah Abdulkader Al Alimi-Bawzer urged world leaders to take action, stating that the rebels’ control of the strait could destabilize global commerce.
