POLICY WIRE — Las Vegas, United States — Singer Lionel Richie has taken a temporary break from touring as he recovers from a recent heart procedure, according to a statement released by his representative.

The 77-year-old musician underwent a standard treatment for atrial fibrillation, or A-fib, and was told by his doctor that the operation was successful. His team shared that he is in good health but will need time to rest before returning to the stage.

A-fib, characterized by an irregular or quivering heartbeat, can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. It affects over 10 million Americans, with most cases occurring in older adults. Richie had previously canceled two concerts in June due to illness and was hospitalized after a performance in St. Louis in August.

Richie is set to perform with Earth, Wind & Fire on Saturday in San Francisco, followed by shows in Chicago on September 30 and Columbus, Ohio, on October 3. He is also scheduled to begin his “King of Hearts” residency at The Wynn in Las Vegas in October and November.

A multi-award-winning artist, Richie rose to fame with The Commodores before becoming a solo star. He co-wrote the iconic charity song “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson and has sold over 100 million records. He currently serves as a judge on “American Idol.”
