POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — Tropical Storm Polo is projected to escalate into a major hurricane this week, according to forecasters. The storm is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall, rough surf, and tropical-storm-force winds to sections of Mexico late Tuesday through early Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued an advisory indicating that Polo could drop between 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of rain, with isolated totals reaching up to 12 inches (30 centimeters), across coastal regions of Guerrero and Michoacán states through Thursday. Potential flooding and mudslides were highlighted as risks.

As of Monday, Polo remained a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (105 kph). It was positioned approximately 255 miles (410 kilometers) south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico, and 200 miles (322 kilometers) southwest of Zihuatanejo. The system was moving east at a speed of 5 mph (8 kph).
