WTA Finals Moving to Charlotte NBA Arena in Bold Bid for Women’s Sports Growth

POLICY WIRE — Charlotte, United States — The elite season-ending championship for women’s tennis, known as the WTA Finals, is heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a three-year residency starting next year.

Organizers announced Wednesday that the high-profile tournament will take place at the Spectrum Center, home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, in a collaborative effort with the Charlotte Sports Foundation.

Qualification for the prestigious year-end showcase is restricted to the top eight singles players and doubles teams, with the competition traditionally scheduled for November.

WTA chair Valerie Camillo expressed high expectations for the multi-year agreement, stating the goal is to establish the tournament not merely as the premier championship in women’s tennis, but as a defining global spectacle for women’s sports at large.

Camillo emphasized the intent to create an annual flagship gathering encompassing women’s tennis, competitive athletics, and sports business as a whole.

Highlighting broader industry trends, Camillo noted that growing audiences, rising investments, and prominent female athletes are increasingly driving global sports and culture.

The decision follows financial adjustments after the WTA exited the final year of a three-year hosting arrangement with Saudi Arabia, opting instead to relocate this year’s tournament to Indian Wells, California, amid concerns regarding regional military conflicts in the Middle East.

Camillo described 2026 as a transitional period involving standard fiscal belt-tightening and the unexpected financial burden of moving the Finals to Indian Wells.

With Indian Wells hosting for only one year, Charlotte will become the eighth distinct venue to host the WTA Finals since 2018.

While specific prize money figures for the upcoming Charlotte tournaments remain unannounced, organizers face a tough challenge matching the record-setting payouts offered previously in Riyadh.

At the 2025 WTA Finals in Riyadh, Elena Rybakina secured $5.23 million after an undefeated 5-0 run, which the organization highlighted as the largest payout in women’s sports history, while runner-up Aryna Sabalenka earned $2.7 million.

Beyond the tournament itself, the WTA will also transfer its global headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Charlotte as part of the overarching partnership.

Long-term plans also include introducing a WTA 500 tournament to Charlotte following the conclusion of 2029.

Camillo highlighted a strategic shift in operational control, noting that the organization will directly manage revenues, expenses, and delivery to secure its own financial destiny.

Prior to taking over the role from retiring chair Steve Simon at the end of last year, Camillo served as president and CEO of Comcast Spectacor’s sports and entertainment division, overseeing business operations for the Philadelphia Flyers and Wells Fargo Center, alongside leadership experience with the Washington Nationals and the NBA.

Addressing potential industry consolidation, Camillo indicated that comprehensive discussions regarding a merger with the men’s ATP Finals have not taken place.

Operating inside an active NBA arena requires significant logistical adjustments, compressing the traditional eight-day schedule into a condensed five-day format.

Consequently, the standard daily lineup of two singles and two doubles matches may shift to a heavier schedule featuring four singles and four doubles matches per day.
