POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — Northwestern Nepal was rattled by two consecutive earthquakes early Wednesday, September 16, 2026, according to local officials.

Despite the seismic activity, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage in the region.

The National Seismological Research Centre reported that the initial tremor, measuring a magnitude of 4.5, occurred at 1:51 a.m. local time. A second quake with a magnitude of 4.2 followed shortly after at 4:28 a.m. local time.

Both events were centered near Kalai in the Mugu district. The tremors were also perceptible to residents in the neighboring districts of Dolpa and Jumla.

Nepal remains situated within a highly active seismic zone and frequently experiences such geological events. Authorities are currently maintaining a state of alert, keeping a close watch for potential aftershocks or delayed reports of damage.
