POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — The director of the 1997 film Starship Troopers has confirmed that the movie’s aesthetic was deliberately influenced by fascist propaganda, after U.S. President Donald Trump shared a proposed Space Force uniform design resembling the film’s iconic look.
Trump posted a mock-up of a “next generation” Space Force uniform featuring dark, sharply tailored clothing, a peaked cap, tall black boots, and a delta insignia on the collar, sleeves, cap, and belt buckle. The graphic described the design as “inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform” and modernised for the guardians of the space domain.

Director Paul Verhoeven, known for his satirical take on militarism in the film, told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie’s heroes are “fascists without knowing that they’re fascists.” He noted that the visual style was modeled after Leni Riefenstahl, a filmmaker closely tied to the Nazi regime through her work glorifying Adolf Hitler. Verhoeven expressed surprise that some viewers failed to grasp the film’s irony, stating that its characters were intentionally designed to reflect authoritarian traits.
