POLICY WIRE — Philadelphia, United States — A Philadelphia police officer was seen using his foot to nudge a man lying on the road before leaving him behind, just before the man was struck and killed by another vehicle.

The incident occurred on August 27 at around 1:40 a.m., when the officer approached Eugene Beauford, 48, who was walking unsteadily along a bike lane. After Beauford fell, the officer exited his vehicle and stood over him before pushing him with his foot. The officer then returned to his car and drove away while Beauford remained on the ground.

Less than five minutes later, a green Kia struck Beauford as he lay between the street and bike lane. The driver fled the scene. Emergency responders, including the same officer, arrived later but failed to provide aid or file a report. Beauford died later at a hospital. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel announced the officer will be fired after a 30-day suspension, citing a breach of ethical duty.
