Household Fabrics That Need More Frequent Washing for Healthier Homes
Experts reveal which fabrics need more frequent washing to reduce allergens and improve indoor air quality.
POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Experts are urging homeowners to pay closer attention to certain fabrics that can accumulate harmful chemicals and allergens, increasing the risk of allergic reactions and respiratory issues.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, materials like carpets, curtains, and bedding can trap irritants such as pollen, dust mites, and mold. Melanie Carver, chief mission officer, emphasized that individuals with allergies or eczema must be diligent about cleaning these items regularly.

Laundry specialists also warn that common household textiles, including shower curtains, throw blankets, and pet beds, often go overlooked in cleaning routines. Matt O’Connor of No Scrubs Laundry Delivery Service advises washing light curtains every 3-4 months and heavier drapes every 6 months to a year. Meanwhile, Scott Grillo of FurZapper highlights that pet beds can be major sources of allergens, recommending weekly washes for dog beds and biweekly for cat beds.
Other key recommendations include washing towels daily if used for cooking, cleaning shower curtains every 1-3 months, and washing pillow inserts every 3-6 months. Stuffed animals should also be laundered monthly to prevent the buildup of allergens. For items that cannot be washed, vacuuming with an upholstery attachment is advised to remove dust mite debris.
