POLICY WIRE — San Jose, U.S. — A 32-year-old Indian-origin woman has been taken into custody for allegedly murdering two of her close friends in separate incidents in California, according to law enforcement officials.

The accused, Anila Baby, is charged with the deaths of Ann Mary Mathew, 35, and Anjana Hari, 35, both of whom were originally from Kerala. The killings took place within about 90 minutes of each other on August 28 in San Jose and Milpitas, two cities located less than 20 kilometers apart in California.

The first incident occurred at Mathew’s home in San Jose, where she was found with stab wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after, Baby allegedly lured Hari to a parking lot in Milpitas, where she ran her over with her SUV. The suspect fled the scene and later crashed into three other vehicles before being arrested with blood on her arms and legs. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the crimes.
