POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — A U.S. artificial intelligence company has disclosed that individuals in Yemen attempted to use its AI platform to design guided weaponry, marking a significant escalation in the use of advanced technology for military purposes.
Anthropic, the firm behind the Claude chatbot, revealed in a report published on September 10, 2026, that it had identified a group operating in northern Yemen engaged in three separate weapons development initiatives. These included a guided rocket utilizing a consumer-grade flight computer, a long-range ballistic missile with a target range exceeding 2,000 kilometers, and a multi-variant missile incorporating a hypersonic glide vehicle.

The group reportedly used the AI system to develop software for guidance, navigation, and control systems, which would typically require a team of engineers.
