POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — Five individuals were killed when an Amazon cargo plane veered off the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, according to officials.

The aircraft, which had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, overran the runway and struck a van used by airport maintenance workers. The impact sent the vehicle through a fence and into a city street, where it collided with an SUV. Five others were injured in the incident, with three in critical condition and two in stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board is examining the crash, focusing on the absence of a runway safety system that could have prevented the accident. Miami’s airport, which lacks such a system, has a 1,000-foot buffer zone at the end of its runways, meeting federal standards. However, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy emphasized the need for better safeguards to avoid future tragedies.
