POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Jeopardy host Ken Jennings has disclosed that he was not entirely truthful during his remarkable run on the game show.
Jennings, now 52, competed in 2004, achieving a record 74 consecutive wins and earning $2,522,700 in regular-season winnings. He assumed the hosting role after Alex Trebek’s passing in 2020.
Contestants on Jeopardy share personal stories after the first round. Jennings has confessed that his tales were not always accurate.
He admitted, I didn’t feel like I had a great story in game number three, much less game number 73. So a lot of my stories are — and I’ve confessed this before — not 100% true.
Jennings explained, It’s just, you know, something that you and Alex Trebek can chat about for 25 seconds. Like, mission accomplished.
He humorously added, “So I told them that I liked airline food. That’s not really true. He asked me if I had any dark secrets, and I told him, ‘I killed a man down south once.’ Also, not true … We don’t fact-check. We’re not The New Yorker on Jeopardy!”

Jennings believes a good anecdote should be “a little bit like a Mad Lib.”
After his contestant stint, Jennings became a guest host in 2021 and later a permanent co-host with Mayim Bialik, who left in December 2023.
On a recent Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, Jennings was asked about potential successors. He humorously responded, “You know, I haven’t really thought about it. I’m in good health. I do my stretches every game, but clearly Bad Bunny.”
