POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — The aging population in America and the increasing prevalence of chronic health issues like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are expected to generate a significant surge in healthcare and social assistance jobs over the next ten years, according to recent labor data from the government.

The Labor Department predicts a 9.5% increase in employment within this sector, resulting in the addition of 2.2 million jobs from 2025 to 2035. This growth is estimated to constitute approximately 37% of all new jobs in the U.S. during that period.

The utilities sector is anticipated to be the fastest-growing industry in the U.S. over the next decade, fueled by the escalating demand for energy to support artificial intelligence. The Labor Department forecasts a 9.8% expansion in this sector by 2035. However, due to the relatively small size of the utilities sector, this growth is expected to yield only 58,800 new jobs over the decade.

The rising demand for AI-based systems and tools, along with research and development in the AI field, is also projected to create nearly 927,000 jobs in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector.

Despite the positive impact of AI on job creation in certain sectors, it is also expected to reduce the need for jobs in administrative functions and retail, among other industries, as noted by economists.

Williams commented on the Labor Department’s employment projections, stating that it is unsurprising that 752,000 administrative positions, such as office clerks, customer service representatives, and secretaries, are expected to be eliminated within the next ten years. He added that the situation is mixed, with some gains from AI demand offset by losses in areas where job reductions are expected.

The Labor Department also points out that the use of AI could diminish the demand for certain jobs in the arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupational group.

Federal government jobs are projected to decrease by 3.4% from 2025 to 2035.
