POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — President Trump announced that he will not be attending the 25th anniversary commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. Instead, he will be visiting the Pentagon.
When questioned by a reporter about his decision to not attend the event in his hometown, Trump responded, “Because I’m going to the Pentagon.”
Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit New York on Sept. 11, according to a White House official. “The vice president is still traveling to NYC and all three sites will be represented with administration officials in attendance,” the official stated, referring to the attack sites in Manhattan, the Pentagon, and the field in Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.
Trump, a native of Queens, last participated in the annual Ground Zero commemoration ceremony in 2024 while campaigning for president, alongside then-President Joe Biden and then-Vice President Kamala Harris. He did not attend the ceremony last year but was present at a New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers game in New York City that paid tribute to the victims.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly commented, As a proud New Yorker, President Trump has spoken about his own experiences witnessing the horrific events of September 11, 2001. On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the president will remember those who were killed at the hands of evil terrorists, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to rescue their fellow Americans.

The New York Times was the first to report that the president would not be attending the Manhattan ceremony. During his first term, Trump did not attend the Manhattan ceremony, choosing instead to honor the victims at the Pentagon or at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, or both. In 2021, he visited New York City police officers and firefighters in Manhattan.
Trump has attended the Manhattan ceremony in other years, including in 2016, when he was running against Hillary Clinton.
