POLICY WIRE — New Orleans, USA — US immigration authorities detained controversial British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday, as confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Yiannopoulos was taken into custody at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. He is accused of remaining in the US beyond the permitted period after entering legally in May 2019 via New York City.

An immigration judge had previously issued a final order of removal against him. Yiannopoulos, known for his extreme political views, has advocated for ICE checkpoints in US supermarkets with immediate deportation for those unable to prove legal status.

The arrest was carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana, under the directives of the DHS.
