Ukraine Appoints Top Commanders to Defend Eastern Region Against Russian Demands

POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed two of Ukraine’s most distinguished commanders to oversee the defense of the country’s eastern strongholds. This move comes as Kyiv faces significant challenges in repelling Russian forces.

Major General Drapatyi, commander of Ukraine’s joint forces group, has been at the forefront of the conflict since Russia’s covert attempt to seize the eastern Donbas region in 2014. His extensive experience includes various command roles in eastern Ukraine and leadership in critical military operations.

Russia is escalating its aerial and artillery attacks on Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, with forces positioned just 13 kilometers away, signaling a potential offensive on these cities. Ukraine’s armed forces are bracing for a difficult fall as Russia ramps up its efforts to capture the eastern Donetsk region.

Drapatyi’s leadership has been pivotal in Ukraine’s resistance, including the liberation of occupied parts of Kherson Oblast in 2022 and the defense of Kharkiv Oblast during a new Russian offensive. His appointment underscores the critical nature of the ongoing military operations.

The new military chief has announced plans to expand offensive operations against Russia, including missions behind enemy lines, following his appointment by President Zelenskyy.
