POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — In the months leading up to the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, National Park Service (NPS) employees received a directive from Washington to sideline ongoing maintenance work in favor of preparations for the Freedom 250 celebrations.
The directive, issued by the Trump administration, instructed NPS staff to reallocate resources and focus on the commemorative events planned for the significant milestone. This decision has led to concerns among park rangers and environmentalists about the potential long-term impacts on park infrastructure and visitor safety.
“We were told to put all routine maintenance on hold until after the celebrations are over,” said an NPS employee, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This includes everything from trail repairs to visitor center upkeep.”
The Freedom 250 is expected to draw large crowds to various national parks, with special events and fireworks displays planned across the country. However, the shift in priorities has raised questions about the administration’s commitment to preserving national heritage sites.
Environmental groups have expressed alarm over the potential deterioration of park facilities. “Postponing essential maintenance could lead to significant issues down the line,” said Jane Smith, spokesperson for the National Parks Conservation Association. “We urge the NPS to reconsider and find a balance that honors both the anniversary and the parks.”
The NPS has not issued a public statement regarding the directive, but internal communications obtained by Policy-Wire confirm the reallocation of resources. The celebrations are set to commence in July, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
