POLICY WIRE — New York/Delaware — Tornadoes have swept through New York and Delaware, causing widespread damage as severe storms brought torrential rain to the Mid-Atlantic region. The storms, which began early Tuesday morning, have resulted in significant property damage and power outages in several areas.
The National Weather Service confirmed multiple tornado touchdowns, with the most severe damage reported in upstate New York and central Delaware. Emergency services are currently assessing the situation and providing assistance to affected residents.
“We are working around the clock to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the affected areas,” said a spokesperson for the New York State Emergency Management Office. “Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.”
In Delaware, Governor John Smith declared a state of emergency, activating the National Guard to assist with relief efforts. “The situation is serious, and we are doing everything we can to support our communities,” Governor Smith stated during a press conference.
The storms have also caused flooding in low-lying areas, with several rivers reaching dangerous levels. Authorities have issued flood warnings and are monitoring the situation closely.
This severe weather comes on the heels of other natural disasters across the region, including the devastating fire that engulfed a restaurant-apartment complex in Thusis, where five people remain missing. (Read more.)
