POLICY WIRE — Dundee, Scotland — Fraser Garden, a 28-year-old banned driver, has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a fatal crash in a stolen Maserati. Garden was driving at nearly three times the speed limit when he crashed into the garden of John Bell, a 75-year-old pensioner, in Broughty Ferry. Bell died from his injuries.
Garden, who had no driving license and was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, fled the scene but was later arrested. He admitted to charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving under the influence.
The court heard that Garden had stolen the Maserati earlier that day. He was also found to be in possession of cocaine and ecstasy. The impact of the crash was so severe that it left a significant crater in Bell’s garden.
“This was a completely avoidable tragedy,” stated the prosecutor. “Garden’s reckless behavior has resulted in the loss of a life and has left a community in shock.”
Garden showed no remorse during the trial, which further aggravated his sentence. The judge emphasized the need for strict penalties to deter similar offenses.
