POLICY WIRE — Elizabethton, Tennessee — A tragic accident occurred this morning when a car struck 11 members of the Milligan University cycling team during a training ride, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to seven others.
The incident took place as the team was conducting their morning training session. According to university officials, the team was hit by a driver whose identity and condition have not yet been disclosed by authorities.
Emergency services were promptly called to the scene. The two deceased students were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while the seven injured individuals were taken for immediate medical attention. Their conditions vary, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Local law enforcement is investigating the cause of the accident. No charges have been filed as of yet, and the driver is cooperating with the authorities.
Milligan University President Dr. Bill Greer released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. “Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn the loss of two bright young lives and pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” he said. “We are working closely with local authorities to understand what happened and will provide any support needed to our students and their families.”
The university has made counseling services available for students and staff affected by this tragedy. Additionally, a vigil is being planned to honor the victims and offer a space for the community to come together in support.
