POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The Home Office has published new guidelines for asylum seekers living in the UK, advising them to refrain from certain cultural practices that may be perceived as inappropriate or offensive by local residents.
Among the recommendations, asylum seekers are cautioned against making ‘kissing sounds’ at people, a practice that may be common in their home countries but is considered impolite in the UK.
The guidance document, titled “New Life in UK Behavior Guidelines Published for Asylum Seekers,” outlines various cultural norms and behaviors expected of asylum seekers to facilitate their integration into British society. It emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting local customs to avoid misunderstandings and social friction.
The document also advises asylum seekers to be mindful of personal space, avoid loud conversations in public places, and dress modestly in accordance with British standards. Additionally, it highlights the significance of learning English to improve communication and employment prospects.
A Home Office spokesperson stated, “These guidelines are intended to help asylum seekers navigate their new environment and build positive relationships with their local communities. Integration is a two-way process, and understanding cultural differences is crucial for a harmonious society.”
The release of these guidelines follows a series of incidents where asylum seekers’ cultural practices led to conflicts with local residents. The Home Office aims to mitigate such issues by providing clear advice on expected behaviors.
