POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The Met Office has launched a public vote to determine whether a weather event will be named after Shaun the Sheep or his cousin, Timmy the lamb. The vote is open to the general public, inviting participants to choose between the two beloved Aardman Animations characters.
The initiative aims to engage the public in meteorological naming conventions, which traditionally draw from a list of names submitted by the public. This contest, however, focuses exclusively on the two fictional sheep.
Shaun the Sheep, the protagonist of the popular stop-motion animation series, has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide with his mischievous adventures. Timmy, his young cousin, is known for his innocent and curious nature.
The Met Office emphasized the importance of public engagement in such initiatives. “Naming weather events helps raise awareness and fosters a connection between the public and meteorological phenomena,” a spokesperson said.
Voting is currently open on the Met Office website, with the winner to be announced in the coming weeks. The chosen name will be added to the official list of named weather events, which the Met Office uses to highlight significant weather systems affecting the UK.
