POLICY WIRE — Dallas, Texas — A Texas teenager, previously convicted of fatally stabbing a 17-year-old track athlete from a rival team during a high school meet in suburban Dallas, is seeking a new trial. The case returned to court this week as the defense argues for a retrial and a new judge.
The incident occurred at a high school track meet where tensions reportedly ran high between the competing teams. The defendant, who was also 17 at the time, was convicted of murder and sentenced to a juvenile detention facility.
“The evidence presented at the original trial was insufficient to secure a fair conviction,” stated the defense attorney. “We are seeking a new trial to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.”
The prosecution maintains that the evidence was clear and that the conviction was just. “The jury heard all the evidence and made their decision based on the facts presented,” said the lead prosecutor. “We believe the original verdict should stand.”
The court will consider the defense’s motion for a new trial and whether a different judge should preside over the proceedings. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
