POLICY WIRE — St. Paul, Minnesota — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, seeking a federal court order to prevent Texas Governor Greg Abbott from extraditing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, Christian Castro.
Ellison petitioned a federal judge to issue an injunction blocking the release of Castro, who is wanted in Minnesota on charges related to his duties as an ICE agent. The Minnesota AG’s office argues that Abbott’s move to extradite Castro violates interstate legal protocols and federal law.
The lawsuit highlights a growing tension between state and federal authorities over immigration enforcement practices. Minnesota contends that Castro’s actions, which are under investigation, require him to face justice within their jurisdiction.
“The extradition of Mr. Castro must be halted to ensure that justice is served according to the law,” Ellison stated in the filing. “Governor Abbott’s actions undermine the legal process and set a dangerous precedent.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has not yet commented on the lawsuit. The case is expected to draw significant attention as it unfolds, given the broader implications for immigration policy and interstate cooperation.
The legal battle comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE operations and the treatment of immigration detainees. This dispute adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and state rights.
