POLICY WIRE — St Aubin’s Bay, Jersey — This summer, St Aubin’s Bay has experienced a notable absence of the green sea lettuce that has previously caused significant issues in the area. The absence of this seaweed is attributed to a combination of elevated temperatures and changes in local farming practices.
Green sea lettuce, scientifically known as Ulva, typically proliferates in nutrient-rich waters. However, the unusually warm temperatures this summer, coupled with modifications in agricultural runoff, appear to have created conditions unsuitable for its growth.
Local environmental experts have noted the change. “The absence of green sea lettuce this summer is quite remarkable,” said Dr. Jane Mitchell, a marine biologist at the Jersey Marine Institute. “It suggests that the warmer waters and reduced nutrient levels from farming are playing a significant role.”
Farmers in the region have adopted new practices aimed at reducing nutrient runoff into the bay. These include improved fertilization techniques and the planting of buffer strips along water bodies to absorb excess nutrients. “We’ve been working closely with local farmers to implement these changes,” said Mark Thompson, head of the Jersey Agricultural Association. “it is encouraging to see positive results so soon.”
The green sea lettuce has historically posed problems for St Aubin’s Bay, clogging waterways and affecting local marine life. Its absence this summer has been welcomed by both residents and environmental groups. “This is a positive sign that our efforts to manage agricultural runoff are effective,” said Emma Lewis, spokesperson for the Jersey Environmental Trust. “We hope to see these practices become standard across the region.”
As the summer draws to a close, attention will turn to whether these changes will have a lasting impact on the bay’s ecosystem. Continued monitoring and adaptation of farming practices will be crucial in maintaining the bay’s health.
