POLICY WIRE — Petersburg, Virginia — Authorities are intensifying their search for additional individuals who fired weapons during a shooting incident at Virginia State University over the weekend. The gunfire resulted in five people being wounded.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement and university security. The wounded individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, with their conditions currently described as stable.
Petersburg Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Emily Jones confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. “We are working diligently to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in this shooting,” Jones stated. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of the university community and bring those responsible to justice.”
University President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah addressed the student body in a campus-wide email, expressing concern and assuring students that additional security measures are being implemented. “We are committed to providing a safe environment for all members of our community,” Abdullah wrote. “We urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the authorities immediately.”
