POLICY WIRE — City, Country — A Ukrainian woman was killed in Russian strikes on Thursday, according to local authorities. The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in the region.
In a separate incident, a NATO jet downed an unidentified drone over Romanian airspace. Romania’s Defence Ministry did not specify the origin of the drone but has previously blamed Russia for similar incidents.
The downing of the drone comes as NATO continues to monitor increased Russian military activity near Ukraine’s borders. The alliance has expressed concerns over the potential for further escalation.
The Ukrainian government condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of international law. “These actions by Russia are a clear breach of sovereignty and must be met with a firm international response,” said a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated, “We are closely monitoring the situation and remain committed to the security of our allies.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong deterrent posture in the face of Russian aggression.
The incidents highlight the volatile nature of the region and the ongoing challenges faced by both NATO and Ukraine in countering Russian military actions.
