POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — Recent findings from India’s solar mission have shed new light on longstanding questions regarding the Sun’s corona, particularly why it is millions of degrees hotter than the Sun’s surface. The mission’s data aims to unravel the mechanisms behind the corona’s inexplicably high temperature.
The Sun’s corona, the outermost part of its atmosphere, reaches temperatures exceeding one million degrees Celsius, vastly hotter than the Sun’s surface, which is around 5,500 degrees Celsius. This temperature disparity has perplexed scientists for decades.
“Understanding the temperature difference between the Sun’s surface and its corona is critical for comprehending solar dynamics and their impact on Earth,” said Dr. Anil Bhardwaj, director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, which is part of the mission.
The Indian solar mission, equipped with advanced instruments, has captured detailed images and data of solar activities, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections. These phenomena are believed to play a significant role in heating the corona.
“Our instruments have provided unprecedented clarity on solar activities, allowing us to observe and analyze the energy release processes in the corona,” Bhardwaj added.
The mission’s findings suggest that magnetic reconnection, a process where magnetic field lines break and reconnect, could be a primary mechanism for heating the corona. This process releases a tremendous amount of energy, contributing to the high temperatures observed.
“These insights are not only crucial for solar physics but also have practical implications for space weather forecasting and protecting satellites and communication systems from solar storms,” Bhardwaj noted.
The Indian solar mission continues to collect data, promising further revelations about the Sun’s complex behavior. As the mission progresses, scientists hope to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Sun’s activities and their effects on the solar system.
