POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A recent survey conducted by Worldpanel by Numerator for Nivea Sun has revealed a concerning trend in sunscreen purchasing habits among UK adults. The poll found that only 56% of adults in England, Scotland, and Wales have bought sunscreen in the past two years. This indicates that more than 40% of the adult population remains unprotected against the harmful effects of UV radiation.
The survey underscores a significant lapse in sun protection practices, particularly as the UK experiences periods of intense sunlight. Health experts have long emphasized the importance of regular sunscreen use to prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
The findings come amid growing concerns about the rising incidence of skin cancer in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK, melanoma skin cancer cases have nearly doubled in the last 20 years. The organization attributes this increase to a combination of factors, including higher levels of UV exposure and changing sun protection behaviors.
Dr. Emily Carter, a dermatologist at the British Association of Dermatologists, commented on the survey results. “it is alarming to see such a large portion of the population not using sunscreen. Sun protection is crucial, not just during peak summer months but throughout the year. UV rays can cause significant damage even on cloudy days.”
The survey also highlighted demographic differences in sunscreen purchasing. Younger adults aged 18-24 were the least likely to have bought sunscreen, with only 45% reporting purchases in the past two years. In contrast, adults aged 45-54 showed the highest purchase rate at 63%.
Nivea Sun, the brand commissioning the survey, expressed concern over the results. “We are committed to promoting sun safety and encouraging regular sunscreen use. These findings show that there is still much work to be done in raising awareness about the importance of sun protection,” said a spokesperson for Nivea Sun.
As the UK braces for potential heatwaves and increased sun exposure, health authorities are urging the public to adopt better sun protection habits. The Department of Health and Social Care has launched campaigns to educate the public on the risks of UV exposure and the importance of using sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
