POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted new proposals to negotiators associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump in an effort to devise a plan to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky’s office announced the move as warnings emerge that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing to escalate hostilities due to Ukraine’s diminishing air defences.
In a statement, Zelensky said, “We are committed to finding a peaceful resolution to this conflict. Our new proposals aim to address the core issues and create a sustainable path to peace.” The contents of the proposals have not been publicly disclosed.
The move comes amid growing concerns over Ukraine’s ability to sustain its air defences. Ukrainian officials have warned that without additional support, the country may face significant challenges in protecting its airspace. “Putin is poised to escalate the conflict as our air defences run dry,” said a senior Ukrainian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.
The involvement of Trump-associated negotiators adds a layer of complexity to the peace efforts. Trump, who has previously expressed a willingness to engage with Putin, has not officially commented on the new proposals. However, sources close to the former president indicate that his team is reviewing the proposals with an open mind.
International reactions to Zelensky’s initiative have been mixed. NATO officials have cautiously welcomed the proposals, while urging all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue. “Any effort to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict is worth pursuing,” said a NATO spokesperson. “We encourage all involved to approach these negotiations with seriousness and commitment.”
As the situation evolves, all eyes are on the responses from both the Russian and U.S. sides. The success of Zelensky’s proposals will depend on the willingness of all parties to compromise and find common ground.
